This past weekend my 11-y.o. baker was in search for a dessert to put on the table to please our guests. She followed some YouTuber's eclair recipe but it was a fail. We only had 1 hour before our guests arrive. Luckily that morning I stumbled in my Facebook feed a recipe for a Chocolate Pine Cones. It looked very festive and perfect for a holiday season. We already had all the ingredients on hand and let me tell you - in a nutshell it's Crunchy, Salty, Sweet, Festive and Delicious. Not only this recipe came out delicious, but my 11 y.o. completed it from scratch in under an hour, our guests were in Aww and WOW and applauding. She definitely deserved the compliments.

Quick and Easy Snowy Chocolate Pine Cones recipe (3)
  • 3 cups Chex Chocolate cereal or comparable
  • 6 pretzel sticks (I used the thicker dipping sticks)
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • ¼ cup Nutella (chocolate hazelnut spread)
  • 3 tablespoons butter,softened
  • Powdered sugar for decorative sprinkling

Directions: Things may get messy at first but do not worry.

  1. Mix the peanut butter, Nutella and butter in a bowl.
  2. Take a pretzel stick and mold some of the peanut butter mixture around it, forming a slight cone shape.
  3. Holding it steady by using the tip of the pretzel as a handle, start inserting pieces of chex cereal into the peanut butter mixture in a symmetrical pattern around the stick. Add more cereal pieces, staggering them as you move upward, until you get near the top.
  4. If your pine cone is getting too tall, cut off the top of the pretzel and add a dollop of peanut butter mixture to cover it. Insert a few more triangle pieces of cereal into the top of the pine cone.
  5. Set Pine cones in the fridge for 15-30 minutes
  6. Lastly For a “snowy” effect, dust the pine cones with powdered sugar.

Now the question is - How do you eat a pine cone? It is very easy. After you refrigerate them for 30 minutes, they become hard for an easy bite with the salty, sweet and crunchy effect. They will be gone in no time

How fun is that. That is something the kids could enjoy it and I could have fun with two. It has everything we love in it so hopefully we could actually make the tree without eating everything ahead of time. LOL.
