My daughter is turning two this month (where did the time go?!). She's been on the slower end of average as far as speech, but she's on time or ahead in social, cognitive, and physical skills. The pediatrician has told us to be patient because sometimes more physically active toddlers are just focused more on that than speech.

Today, her daycare teacher expressed some concerns that she's having trouble sitting still for short group tasks, especially practicing colors, shapes, etc. She will be with a group of older 2 year olds this summer due to class sizes, so they wanted us to practice. She suggested flash cards (we already read bbooks daily).

Any other suggestions to help her practice speech and sit still longer?

Kinder teacher here, for whatever that’s worth but I wouldn’t recommend flash cards on a fresh 2 yr old. I would utilize your colored toys to have more fun teaching colors, or even crayons. I taught my son shapes/numbers by drawing them in chalk and having him stand on each one and just practicing everyday while we played outside. He also loves the posters we have hung up on his wall at his eye level.

The general rule for toddlers sitting still is the amount of mins per age. 2 minutes, that’s not long. Having a daycare share that she’s not sitting still is kinda crazy imo, she’s TWO! It’s all about redirection.

As for speech, I’m in the same boat. We also do private ST twice a week and I can tell you it’s basically Ms. Rachel! If you can emulate her, that’s so helpful. The biggest one that works for us is starting a saying/set of words and letting my son finish. Give it 10 seconds before finishing, and if they don’t.. still say it for them! So they dont get discouraged. We use a lot of books and my son loves to point to pictures for me to label. Sometimes it’s not about reading every single word in the books, but shortening it and enunciating the words (which helps with attention as well.)

You’re doing great mama. And your little is perfect.

@deeveee,

thanks! how much time do you spend on practicing with toys, chalk, etc at a time, and how many times each day?

@doornbme,

collectively, probably a couple hours a day. I always integrate colors, shapes, abcs etc when I can but I’m also very mindful of meeting him where he’s at. You gotta make it fun. If kiddos feel pressured or forced in any way they’ll shut down/ignore/not cooperate. So if he’s not in “the mood”, I move on. You can see how much more receptive they are when they’re interested..that’s why making it fun makes a huge difference. But if we’re outside and he just wants to play with leaves, I let him! Here’s what our outside space is like for reference.

We love making it into a game..he will go stand on the circle and either say it or want me to say it. I’ll work off that and be like “where’s 5?!” He goes there. But it started with him standing on each one and me naming it/me standing on each one and naming it. And I’d be silly with it. No pressure. Now he can identify them on his own.

Make it fun! And don’t push it.. kids are smart and they will definitely feed off your vibe. Just integrate it into any part of the day when it seems right.

This here is the mom with the only kid in class with a big rubber band on his chair to get the wiggles out while he’s sitting ‍♀️ he was also almost in early intervention for speech as well. Now he’s in kindergarten and is at a 2nd grade reading level and scoring 99th percentile in math. This kiddo can already do simple division and multiplication.

All that is to say, don’t worry too much! I agree with pp that it’s crazy to expect a 2 year old to sit still. You’d think professional day care workers would realize that. But my suggestion would be doing songs with hand gestures sitting down. Itsy-bitsy spider, open shut them, wheels on the bus. Give her something to do with her hands to help her practice sitting down.

My daughter is a sensory seeker and has a really hard time sitting for any amount of time. We are in early intervention (we were set up right from the hospital since she was born 6 weeks early). Realizing our daughter needs a lot of sensory input has been a huge game changer for us. Deep pressure (hugs or gentle squishes with pillows) swinging, climbing etc. Once we engage in some sensory activities she is able to sit and concentrate more. Early intervention is not concerned in our case because our daughter is learning and progressing great- talking in sentences a lot of the time. As a parent it’s hard to not compare when I get together with friends and their kids. My daughter seems to be the only one who won’t sit still, complete a puzzle etc. However it’s not that she can’t complete a puzzle. She knows all her shapes, colors, ABC’s etc. so with EI we are just working to give her the sensory input she needs in order to help her be her best self.

*I am not saying your daughter needs this, however it doesn’t hurt to discuss either your pediatrician or even get an evaluation for EI. If she qualifies great- then they will help you and your daughter! And if she doesn’t qualify- great-then you can feel better about knowing your daughter is doing exactly what she should be

@Emily-MC,

I'll definitely talk with my pediatrician about this. She has always been sensory focused, much more than the other kids in her class. Thanks!

I got the same talk about 2 yr old daughter! Her preschool did circle time and said she would rather play toys. But a lot of their kids are wigglers too! We just taught her to play quietly during circle time and eventually (closer to age 3) she was ready for circle time. Now at age 5 she loves learning at school, she just wasn’t ready for that style of teaching at age 2.

@MrsJJ3,

I think this might be part of it. She loves to explore and is physically very active.

I don't think "still" and "2 year old" go together.
Mine is a whirlwind. She can focus on tasks for a few mins, but NEVER while being still. I guess it depends if the teacher was concerned about the actual movement or more about the attention span of your child?

I do think that a lot of things kids watch on screens these days promote a lack of focused attention. Even long form content, my LO is aware of how easy it is to change it and that there's a bunch more options at the tap of a button. So if it's not something super dynamic she wants to skip it. At least this is what I've noticed in my own experience. My husband and I are making a concerted effort to use screen time more wisely and focus on some slower moving things and not give in to demands to switch too frequently.

@cookie0715,

She's more concerned about her movement. During circle time she gets up and walks away or leaves the table when they're writing. She can focus for awhile if she's doing something she likes. We read about 15-20 min each night and she's focused for all that. She asks what things are, and I ask her questiona, too. She's also really into collecting sticks outside, building block towers, singing with gestures, and climbing rock walls at our park. She can do those activities for 5-20 min each. However, they all involve more physical activity.
